Grid connection is the real constraint in battery storage

The cells and inverters are a commodity. The connection is the project.

A battery is the easy part. The cells, the inverters, the EPC: all of it can be bought, and most of it is much the same from one supplier to the next. What you cannot buy off a shelf in Finland is a grid connection at the right point, at the right capacity, on a date you can finance against. That, not the hardware, is what a storage project is.

The grid is the constraint

This stopped being a developer's grievance and became an official position in 2025. Fingrid, the transmission system operator, has fielded more than 30 GW of grid-storage connection requests against a system that cannot absorb anything close to it. Its answer in the south of the country, where demand is heaviest, was to stop connecting new grid storage until 2029, when the Hikiä–Toivila reinforcement is due. Connections are first-come, first-served, with a queue. Any storage project above 5 MW now has to put a connection inquiry to Fingrid, which sets the maximum capacity available at that point, and the capacity itself is only confirmed late, in the connection agreement. A new 400-kilovolt line is the work of the better part of a decade, from planning to commissioning.

Put those facts together and the order of work inverts. The instinct is to find a strong market position and then connect to it. For storage that is backwards. Fingrid has said it plainly: location makes little difference to how a battery earns, because the reserve and wholesale markets it trades in are national. The connection, by contrast, is intensely local, and it is scarce. So the site does not lead. The connection leads, and the site follows it to wherever capacity is genuinely available, which today is more often central or northern Finland than the crowded south.

The revenue still stacks

None of this weakens the revenue case, which is good. A battery in Finland stacks income: frequency reserves for Fingrid, traded in the FCR, aFRR and faster reserve markets on a technology-neutral basis, and the spread between cheap and expensive hours on the wholesale market, which widens as wind and solar grow against a shrinking pool of flexible plant. The returns are real. They simply only reach a project that connects, in time, where it said it would.

The connection is the spine

That is why we treat the connection as the spine of a storage project, not a box to tick near the end. We target points where capacity is realistically there, not where we wish it were. We open the inquiry early and keep the conversation with Fingrid and the regional operator live through the whole development, because the capacity picture moves and a project that loses track of it loses its place. And we carry that process through to confirmed capacity before we call a site ready to build, because confirmation is the moment the project becomes financeable. Everything above it is risk.

A developer who masters the battery and not the grid has solved the wrong problem. In Finland, the grid is the problem worth solving.
